Dower? Do you know Dower?

If you own a home or thinking of buying a home you should know something about Dower. The Dower Act is from the early 1900's and basically protects a non owner spouse who lives in the home. So if Jack & Mary are legally married & live in a house but only Mary owns it Jack has dower rights. Jack would need to agree in writing for Mary to sell it. NOW the change is coming that this will now apply to non married couples. So if Mary owned the house and her and Jack were not married Jack could possibly have Dower Rights. This is a major change the the government of Alberta has recently mentioned that is changing in January. We do not know the exact particulars yet and will stay on top of it of course but be aware and watch for my updates.
